A lot of the fabrics we stock are double gauze. But what exactly is double gauze and what can you make with it?
Double gauze consists of two fine layers of cotton which are basted together at regular intervals. You can hardly see the basting stitches from the right side of the fabric. They provide stability and strength for the two cotton layers.
This makes for an airy and soft fabric, which has a good weight and drape for dressmaking projects. It is the perfect fabric for shirts, dresses, skirts, pyjamas and kimono's. Because it is soft, breathable and washable, it is a good fabric for babies and children's clothing. It is also very suitable for blankets, quilts, pillowcases and other accessories.
It is best to wash it on a cool setting and then letting it air dry, or dry it on a cool setting.
The team at Colette Patterns have written a great article about double gauze, including pattern suggestions and sewing tips, which you can find here.
