Introduction to Foundation Paper Piecing

Have you heard the term 'FPP' or 'foundation paper piecing and don't know what it means? Have you seen complex quilts or blocks and wonder what kind of quilty magic is involved? Now is your chance to learn! Foundation paper piecing (FPP)provides precise control over fabric placement and seam alignment, resulting in sharp, accurate quilt blocks. It also allows for the creation of intricate designs and patterns that may not be possible with traditional piecing.

Foundation paper piecing is a technique for creating quilt blocks where you sew fabric to a paper template — the foundation — using your sewing machine. Not only does it make for precise sewing and points, it can also be used to create pictures or sew very small pieces using odd angles.

You Will Learn How to ...

  • Read a FPP pattern
  • Understand how to place fabric, align templates, sew, and remove the paper
  • Accurately measure and cut fabric needed for your pieces
  • Avoid common mistakes, such as making sure you print your pattern the correct size, how to not waste fabric, proper cutting, seam allowances, and more

Supplies Needed

  • We will provide the Celebration Wreath pattern by Carol Doak.
  • A variety of scraps in colors of your choice
  • An Add-a-Quarter ruler (available at the shop)
  • Glue stick (we have glue pens, but Elmer's glue sticks will also work)
  • Foundation paper piecing paper (available at the shop) or other lightweight paper that can go into a printer
  • Basic sewing supplies such as a rotary cutter, clips, pins, measuring tape, rulers, etc.

Note: You must bring your own sewing machine.
