Underground Railroad Sampler Quilt

The Underground Railroad quilt is a story about a set of quilt blocks that could have helped enslaved people escape slavery.

In this class you learn a variety of quilt-making techniques, from log cabin blocks to the drunkard's path, the hourglass, and more that will result in a beautiful sampler quilt. Under the guidance of Sherry, our instructor, you will work through fifteen quilt blocks that may have played a significant role in helping enslaved people to find their way to freedom.

During the first session you will become familiar with the book we will be using and the various quilt blocks, select your fabrics, and start working on the first two blocks.

Required Pattern Book:

Additional Supplies:

You will need a variety of basic quilting supplies. Additional rulers/templates needed for certain blocks will be discussed in class.

• Marking pens
• Quilting Ruler
• Cutting Mat
• Rotary Cutter
• Matching Thread
• Scissors
• Pins or sewing clips

Notes:

• You must provide your own sewing machine.
• A 1/4-inch presser foot is highly recommended
• If your machine hasn’t been serviced in a while and is making clunking or other abnormal noises, or the tension is funky, take it in for service before you start. A well maintained machine will make piecing so much easier

Stop in early to choose your fabrics and get and any other supplies you may need. The Fiber Lab offers a 15% discount on class supplies.

Register early. Classes with fewer than 3 registrations, 72 hours (3 days) prior to the start of class will be canceled. Students will be notified if a class is cancelled, and the registration fee will be refunded.
