From the Farm to Your Needles

Mitchell Wool Co. is a family farm located in Dryden, Michigan. One of their primary goals is to strengthen the American wool industry. They are doing this by sourcing their fibers from farmers who adhere to ethical sheep-raising practices. American Fibers yarns are sourced, milled, and dyed here in the United States. The fleeces are purchased from American farmers and the yarn is then processed and milled in the United States. In addition, Mitchell Wool Co's yarns are dyed right on the family farm using a variety of natural and sustainably sourced dyes. When you purchase Mitchell Wool Co. yarn, you are supporting numerous small businesses and farms.

How Did They Achieve That Color?

Mitchell Wool Co. uses natural dyes derived from plants, insects, and food waste.

Dandelion
Dyed with Marigold plants grown on the Mitchell's farm. In turn, the spent dye matter is fed to the pigs and cattle on the farm. That is some safe planet impact!!

Heirloom Tomato
Dyed on farm using Madder which is derived from a root and has been used to dye rich reds since the 16 and 17th centuries. Madder originates from the subcontinent of India, Central Asia and Europe.

Lamb
Undyed and naturally perfect, it's as close to the bouncing lambs in the field that you can get. A soft cloud white.

Piglet
Cochineal is used to create this vibrant hued pink. The use of cochineal for dyes dates back to 250AD. The dye is derived from the shell of an parasitic insect prevalent in India, SouthEast Asia and Nepal.

Tractor
Green is tough and obtaining a true Grassy goodness is kind of tricky. Cindy, who is the dye master for Mitchell Wool Co. achieved this beautiful green using Mulberry and chlorophyll.

Sky
Jasmine delivers the beautiful, crisp and refreshing blue — exactly like a bright early June sky.
